A Plot to Kill Birbal: Akbar and Birbal Stories

Akbar and Birbal were in the royal court along with the other ministers sharing stories of their bravery.

"I was going for a picnic in the jungle area with my family and all of a sudden I saw a lion. I defeated the lion and protected my family", a minister said.

Another minister became jealous and said, "That's nothing, you saw on a lion. When I was going for a picnic in the jungle area, I saw a group of lions. I was able to defeat all of them at once and protect my family"

Akbar and Birbal looked at each other and smiled at each other realizing all of the stories were fake.

Akar: Okay now, I know all of you are very brave and intelligent. But none of you are as brave and intelligent as Birbal, am I right Birbal?

Birbal (speaks with hesitation): I don't..... I am not sure....If you say so, your highness.

All the ministers became jealous of Birbal.

After the meeting, the minister gathered in a place. They knew that as long as Birbal was alive and well they would never be able to become close to the king or ever become a prime minister. This feeling worried them. They could not come up with any better ways to get rid of them. One of them suggested that we kill him and blame it on the neighboring country.

They all agreed upon this.

In the evening, all of them gathered in the royal court for a meeting. They reported their monthly work to the king and informed him about the conditions of the villagers.

All the ministers were speaking shakingly, constantly looking at each other, and behaving unusually. Birbal knew something was not right. After the meeting, Birbal decided to follow them.

He carefully followed them into the jungle and saw his ministers digging a hole and putting sharp objects inside. He then knew that the ministers were jealous of him and wanted to kill him.

Hole for Birbal: Stories of Akbar and Birbal

The ministers did their job and went away.

The next morning when the king and his ministers were walking to the village they came close to the hole they had dug last night. They started looking at each other and making gestures.

The hole they dug was now two steps away. As they all took a step further, all the ministers fell into big holes. They were in pain and in shock. Didn't we dig one hole yesterday? one of them said.

The king was upset and worried that it was an ambush.

Birbal points at another hole one step ahead of them that was filled with sharp objects and was meant for him.

Birbal: Your Highness, when we gathered in the court yesterday I realized something was off. I followed them and found out they had been planning to kill me. I saw them dig a hole and put sharp objects in it. After they went, I dug other four holes just a step behind the hole that was meant for me.

Birbal points at the ministers in the hole and says, "You are lucky I didn't put any sharp objects there."

Akbar: Shame on you! Such evil doings in my country are not tolerable, let alone by my ministers. I therefore sentence all of you to prison for life.

The ministers started crying and asking for mercy.

Bibal: Your Highness, I request you to show a little mercy on them. After all, these are men with family and kids.

Akbar: How kind and thoughtful you are, Birbal. Their families indeed need them but this crime should not go unpunished. I order all of you to leave the country with your families and not step into this country again.

Birbal: Does that apply to me as well, Your Highness?

Akbar: Not you Birbal, not you.

Akbar and Birbal both laugh and go back to the palace.
